But with the majority (estimated at around 85%) of users only viewing the first page of the search engine results, the battleground is crowded.
That's why many businesses (and potentially your competitors) are increasingly turning their attention to Search Engine Optimisation in order to improve their website's positioning in the search engine results.

Search Marketing differs from SEO because it is less about the design of your own website and more about how people are driven to it.
All of the main search engine companies offer some form of 'pay-per-click' service (Google Adwords and Yahoo! Sponsored Search being the best-known examples), whereby you bid to appear within - and hopefully high up in - the 'sponsored' search results that typically appear at the top and/or right of the natural search listings. When your sponsored listing appears in the search results you'll only pay when people click on your website link.
This Search Marketing approach can be a very effective way of gaining new business, but you do need to carefully manage your activities to ensure that costs don't run away from you.
